Evening House Fires in Southeast Edmonton Leave One Person Hospitalized

Fires in Mill Woods lead to evacuations and a quick emergency response

On Monday evening, two separate house fires broke out in southeast Edmonton just hours apart. One person was sent to the hospital, and evacuations took place in a busy residential area.

Fire at Lakewood Road Leaves One Injured

A fire in a multi-suite residential building in Mill Woods on Monday night sent one person to the hospital. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) got the call at 7:18 p.m. about a blaze near Lakewood Road North and 75 Street.

Six fire crews arrived quickly to contain the flames and protect nearby homes. For safety, residents in neighboring suites were evacuated while firefighters worked inside the building.

According to EFRS, the fire was brought under control by 8:13 p.m., with crews remaining on scene until it was officially declared out at 10:59 p.m. The extent of the individual’s injuries has not been disclosed, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The City of Edmonton’s Emergency Support Response Team (ESRT) was also dispatched to the scene to aid displaced residents who needed temporary assistance following the evacuation.

Second Blaze Reported Just Hours Earlier

The Lakewood Road incident followed another house fire reported only a few hours earlier, raising concerns among residents about fire safety in the area.

At 5:38 p.m., firefighters were called to a home on Lee Ridge Road, located just a few blocks from the later Mill Woods fire. The first fire engine arrived within minutes at 5:42 p.m., and six crews worked together to battle the flames.

EFRS confirmed the fire was under control by 6:22 p.m. and fully extinguished at 8:58 p.m. No injuries were reported in this earlier incident, and residents were not required to evacuate surrounding homes.

Community Impact and Emergency Response

Although the two fires are not thought to be related, their timing and how close they were got the community’s attention. People in southeast Edmonton said they saw heavy smoke and emergency lights in the neighborhood all evening.

EFRS has not released details on what caused either fire. Investigations typically examine electrical systems, heating sources, and other potential ignition factors before conclusions are shared publicly.

Fire Safety Remains a Key Concern

Monday’s events serve as a reminder of how quickly residential fires can escalate and disrupt entire blocks. Fire officials continue to encourage homeowners and tenants to maintain working smoke alarms, stay aware of escape routes, and report any signs of fire immediately.

As the investigations continue, EFRS will share more updates if new information comes out.
